3 More Sleeps!

I'm so excited to go home for the holidays that I am having trouble focusing on anything for a long period of time, I am listening to Christmas music ALL THE TIME, I was awake at 6 am on a Saturday, and it's hard to stay still.

Now if only my bags would pack themselves.

See you at 1:55 pm Eastern Time Canada on Wednesday the 19th! (That's at Pearson Airport in Toronto in case anyone has nothing to do and would be interested in greeting me upon arrival). I love a good reunion at an airport! :)

Walking In A Winter Wonderland

Well sort of, yes it's Winter Wonderland, but no sleigh bells were ringing and no snow was glistening.

Last night, December 15th, I experienced Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park. Who shared that experience with me you ask? Kelly, 2 Matts, Marzena, and Dayna. So, that's 3 Aussie's, a Polish, and 2 Canadians in total. (I just like sharing the cultural diversity of the group).

At Winter Wonderland, they have lots of booths with food, crafts, gifts, drinks, sweets and candies, and chocolate. There are also carnival games and rides. My first tasty experience? A Bacon Pork bap with bacon, pork, stuffing, apple something, and gravy all inside one bun. It was delicious! I'm not crazy about stuffing but it added a nice touch. Next stop: Mulled Cider. Imagine hot apple cider with alcohol. :)

The boys then tried their luck at the archery ring (they weren't lucky though, no prizes were won for Kelly or Dayna). After that, a ride on the ferris wheel where we could see a night time view of Winter Wonderland and Central London.

The beautiful ferris wheel (and just a sample of the large number of people also at Winter Wonderland)

A selfie with night time Central London skyline in the background

Winter Wonderland from above

To top off the night, I purchased a large bag of fresh Haribo candy (none of which is left less than 24 hours later) and we watched ice skaters from the sidelines, laughing as they wiped out but knowing most of us wouldn't be any better if we were on the ice.

Thank you Winter Wonderland!

Missing Working in Retail

One of the best parts of working at Coles was the excitement of the Christmas season and the hustle and bustle of the Pen Centre and the store from the end of October until Christmas time. I loved it! Decorations in the store and out in the mall corridors, the Christmas colours, and the mixture of Christmas shoppers from young to old, grouchy to hyper excited.

So, because I was missing this environment I decided to spend my Friday night this weekend at one of the best shopping centres the city of London has to offer. Westfield's at Shephard's Bush. I think it's a magical place anytime of the year, and even though I found it overwhelming the first time I went in because of all the different stores and the size of the place, it's has become one of my favourite places in London.

Here's a beautiful tree outside one of the entrances.

Inside they even have an ice skating rink for the holiday season, so I stood for a few minutes and watched the skaters and marvelled at the lights and decorations around.

The other awesome thing about Westfield's this Christmas? It was Taylor Swift who did a performance and switched on the lights at the mall's opening celebration of the holiday season.

10 More Sleeps!

I know, I know, don't wish your days away. But I can't help but be excited and glad that after 10 more sleeps I'll be on my journey home to Canada for the holidays!!!!!

No one really tells you how hard it can be to be far away from home, and no one really prepares you for what you might feel emotionally on an adventure abroad. So let me be the first to say, it's hard. It's BEEN hard. The phrase "You don't know what you've got until it's gone" is a phrase I have a much greater understanding of because of my current experience.
I have an amazing family. My parents are supportive and generous, fun to be around, and 2 of my absolute favourite people. My brother and I have this teasing-joking sibling relationship that I wouldn't trade for anything. There's times where the teasing has gotten to me and I've wanted my space (and silence) away from him, but now that I've actually been away from it for a few months, there is no one else who will ever tease me the same way or have the same sense of humour. I can't wait to spend 2 and a half weeks having adventures with my family. I'm so glad that I asked for quality time this year for Christmas. That's something that you can't have on an adventure abroad, quality time with your family. But gifts and things can be bought anywhere, so this year those things just aren't special enough.
I even miss the simplicity of life in a small town. That's something I NEVER thought I would say. I miss riding in a car. I miss road trips. I miss just running errands in a car. I have a much greater appreciation for a simpler lifestyle even after spending just a few months living in one of the biggest cities in the world. Yes, London is exciting. Yes, London always has thing to do. But, there's nothing like spending a night in at a friend's house watching movies and laughing until your stomach hurts. And a night like that just is more appealing in a smaller city and town.
So Canada, I've decided I won't be away forever. I'm not even sure exactly how long I'll be away. But I will come home to you, because I appreciate you as a place to live much more know that I've been away.

In true Katie style, here's a song that expresses my feelings about home. Take it away Miley Cyrus...

You wake up, it's raining and it's MondayLooks like one of those rough daysTime's up, you're late again so get out the door
Sometimes you feel like runningFind a whole new life and jump inLet go, get up and hit the dance floor
But when the lights go down it's the ending of the showAnd you're feeling like you got nowhere to goDon't you know?
You can change your hair and you can change your clothesYou can change your mind, that's just the way it goesYou can say goodbye and you can say helloBut you'll always find your way back home
You can change your style, you can change your jeansYou can learn to fly and you can chase your dreamsYou can laugh and cry but everybody knowsYou'll always find your way back home
Your best friends, your little hometownAre waiting up wherever you go nowYou know that you can always turn around
'Cause this world is big and it's crazyAnd this girl is thinking that maybeThis life is what some people dream about
'Cause when I'm feeling down and I am all aloneI've always got a place where I can go'Cause I know
You can change your hair and you can change your clothesYou can change your mind, that's just the way it goesYou can say goodbye and you can say helloBut you'll always find your way back home
You can change your style, you can change your jeansYou can learn to fly and you can chase your dreamsYou can laugh and cry but everybody knowsYou'll always find your way back home
Where they know exactly who you are?Where the real you is the superstarYou know it's never too far away
You can change your hair and you can change your clothesYou can change your mind, that's just the way it goesYou can say goodbye and you can say helloBut you'll always find your way back
You can change your hair and you can change your clothesYou can change your mind, that's just the way it goesYou can say goodbye and you can say helloBut you'll always find your way back home
You can change your style and you can change your jeansYou can learn to fly and you can chase your dreamsYou can laugh and cry but everybody knowsYou'll always find your way back home
You'll always find your way back homeYou'll always find your way back homeYou'll always find your way back home

106 Finchley Christmas

On December 8th, we celebrated Christmas at 106 Finchley Road. The evening consisted of great food, friends, Secret Santa presents, and holiday music (including several versions of Little Drummer Boy, one of my favourite Christmas carols).

On the menu was:

Stuffed Turkey Breasts with Goat Cheese & Cranberries (courtesy of Chef Kelly)
Mashed Potatoes with Pepper (Courtesy of Chef Jenn & Chef Jason)
Mashed Potatoes with Pistachios and Mustard...? (Courtesy of Chef Matt)
Sauteed Green Beans (Courtesy of Chef Georgie)
Chocolate Chip Cookies (Courtesy of myself & Betty Crocker)
Fresh Bread and assorted Chocolate Biscuits (Courtesy of Chef Sam)

Thanks to Matt & Dayna for also attending our festivities and joining us for a drink!

For someone who is very particular about how things happen at Christmas time (as everyone learned yesterday) I think we had a great Christmas party and it was a memory that I will cherish.

Here are some pictures!

Michael McIntyre

This post is long overdue, but on Thursday November 29th, I went to see the comedian Michael McIntyre's arena tour show courtesy of Vision Teaching. I had never heard of him before, but I must say he was quite entertaining! The entire first half of the show I practically laughed at every word! (The second half, I'm sure, was equally as funny, but I fell asleep for most of it. I came down with the stomach flu that night!). This was my first time seeing a comedian perform at a large venue like Wembley Arena so it was quite a neat experience. A bit different than a Taylor Swift concert, but enjoyable! The venue does the large t.v screen thing so that viewers at the back can still see well. The entire audience is also equally as engaged I think. A great experience!

Here is a youtube clip of a comedy piece of his. This way you can get a sense of his humour for yourself! (Just click on his name to open the video in a new page)

A New Guard, A Neat Market, & A Darling Cafe

Where did this weekend's exploration take me?

First, Georgie and I headed to Buckingham Palace to see the Changing of the Guard. Must I say what an extravagent and time-consuming affair to have to happen every other day in Autumn and EVERY day in the Summer. Roads blocked, pedestrians everywhere, and police officers / security who on repeat have to say "Keep the gap clear!, Move to the side!".

We arrived around 10:50 am, thinking the event happened at 11:00, but it didn't happen until 11:30 so we stood and waited (atleast it was bright and sunny!). We engaged in discussion about how if we were police officers, we would be mounted police. They seem to have it made, just riding around on horse back. Do they actually engage in high speed chase? Or stop crime? Or catch people speeding in their cars? Doesn't seem as though they do.

Finally the processional began, and the drums, trumpets, and marching began.

We couldn't see much of what happened once the procession got inside the palace gates, so we left. All in all it was still exciting to see a bit of what all of the fuss is about!

We headed to Spitalfield's Market near Liverpool Street Station. We wandered amoung the many stalls looking at different jewellary, art work, knick knacks, food, and clothing. For lunch, I even tried something new! A pork bun and some assorted dumplings and other oriental delights.

A pork bun - It was pretty tasty, mind you I had to ask for a fork to eat it! How very un-oriental of me to not use chopsticks. Baby steps.

This is the food stand our lunch came from. Thank you Keke!

After more browsing at the market, Georgie and I decided to find a cafe for a hot drink and something sweet. Since I had spotted someone with a take-away bag from one of my favourite cafes, I suggested we find it. So using our trusty iPhones, we began our hunt for...

So amazing, I had an English Breakfast Tea and a slice of Vanilla Cake with pink frosting. Delightful! :)

The Year 4 Experience

This past week, I had the opportunity to do a short term supply cover in a Year 4 classroom. Here's what I learned...

1. Migration & immigration are too similar of words. Migration means to "move from one country or region and settle in another" and immigration means "to enter or settle in a country or region to which one is not native". Huh?
2. Children take a ridiculously long time to get ready to go home at the end of the school day at EVERY age.  I could have had the children pack up at 3 pm for a 3:25 pm finish time and it still probably wouldn't have been enough.
3. It is very hard to teach when you are sick and losing your voice.
4. There is no way to teach without talking.
5. Getting children to race for "team points" is a great way to get students to do something quickly!
6. Children like to be silly, and if as a teacher you can show them that you can be silly too, they will actually think you are human and respect you as a teacher.
7. If children are rocking on their chair, tell them a horror story of something that happened to you or someone you know who was rocking on their chair, and they will stop. Atleast for the next 20 minutes.
8. Just do your best. Teachers aren't perfect and mistakes are okay. Just try again tomorrow!
9. The smoother the surface, the less friction there is when a shoe moves across it. The rougher the surface, the more friction there is when a shoe moves across it.
10. The name Aman. "It's A-man, not Ah-min." Got it.
11. It actually is helpful to have students who don't like to go out for break, it means you can relax a minute while they hand out work and set up your lesson resources.
12. Don't forget what it is like to be a student. Especially a young one. I think the longer a teacher can hold on to that and still put themselves in the position of the student, the better a teacher they will be.

The End Of An Era

This is a little bit off topic as far as adventures abroad go, but I saw the final chapter of the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 on Saturday the 17th.

It made me reminisce about all of the Twilight movies and basically the journey I have been on between the release of the first movie to theatres and now. I saw Twilight, the first one, on my first date (ever) with my ex-Victor. So, essentially my dating life began with Twilight. Just to think where I am now and all of the relationship experiences I have had since that time in 2008 is crazy! There's been lust, longing, obsession, heartbreak, hurting, tears, smiles, laughs, frowns, and everything in between. Now, the memories of seeing the movies in between are a bit foggy I'll be honest. I know I saw Eclipse in theatres twice, once with my Mom and once with a friend named Hannah. Then Breaking Dawn Part 1 I was a little late on seeing, but I watched it with one of my best friends Denise. New Moon is the one I really am just completely lost on! I apologize to whoever I saw this with that I don't remember! I do know I loved this one because it had a lot to do with Jacob, my favourite character. Team Jacob all the way!
So, I encourage those of you who are Twilight fans to think of the journey your life has taken from the release of Twilight to Breaking Dawn Part 2. What adventures have you had? How are you the same or different from then to now? Just something to think about.

Not As Amazing As Little Hugs But Pretty Close...

On Tuesday & Wednesday last week, I taught a Year 5 class at Stanburn School, one of my favourite schoolsd and one I have visited most often. Remember the school with the singing assembly? It's this one! (I got to be a part of another singing assembly too that featured London's Burning in round form!).

Now my time with this class got off to a rough start. I had taught them for a few lessons here and there in the past, and had basically been tested by a few characters in the class! However, I let them know I hadn't forgotten my time with them! While Tuesday I spent the whole day speaking to the class in a raised voice, and spent a fair amount of time at the gym that evening releasing my pent up energy, Wednesday was like a 180 degree turn in behaviour! It might have helped that a few children were absent for the Diwali holiday, but I just couldn't believe my luck! And then to get this card signed by quite a few of the children, it was like woah! I guess I won them over! While it doesn't beat little hugs and waves from young children, it sure does make you feel pretty good as a supply teacher!

Why Hello There Mr. Goat!

So today, on a bright and sunny walk to Oxford Street for some shopping, Georgie and I met this darling creature...

A goat! It looked like he was on a school's property. But he was up on a small cement perch just looking at people passing by on the street.
So, of course we had to pose with the goat!

Georgie & the goat

What a day!

It's the Circle of Life

On Tuesday, November 6th I saw my first musical in London (with the best date in town, Miss Georgie Ford, I must add).

The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre in Covent Garden was phenomenal. I was so happy to see this production after all these years of wanting to!

The music, the costumes, everything was amazing!

I came home and immediately purchased the musical soundtrack on iTunes for only 4 pounds!

I highly recommended The Lion King to anyone who has not seen it!

Hakuna Matata! :)

All Aboard to Windsor!

On Tuesday, October 30th I visited the quaint town of Windsor with my two roommates, Georgie & Kelly. This was my 2nd time taking a train to a location outside of London, and it was a gorgeous day for it! Bright and sunny, a bit chilly but no rain!

Our first stop of the day (well the first official stop, as I had to have a treat from a cafe to make sure I made a few more hours until lunch without getting grumpy!) was Windsor Castle, home of Queen Elizabeth II and her family (Georgie fun fact: Windsor is the last name of Queen Elizabeth, so it actually is her family castle).

The castle is huge, and from the outside it definitely didn't seem very livable, but apparently it's home to over 150 individuals!

It was neat to see all of the State Rooms inside with ceiling murals, crystal chandeliers, velvet carpet and beautiful tapestries. On display was also a gigantic doll house featuring rooms that replicated that of royal rooms, including the maid and male servant rooms, a luggage room, a linen room to the master bedrooms and children nurseries.

The grounds were beautiful as well and were the perfect backdrop for some group photos!

After completing our tour of the castle, we ventured to a pub for lunch and found one called The Carpenter's Arms that looked quite traditional and cosy. A great place for a chicken & mushroom pie and a cider!

Our next sight was a short walk to Eton to tour around Eton College, a private school for boys starting at age 12. We even walked around the grounds (although I definitely felt like a trespasser!). It's such an old building, that I couldn't even imagine attending school there in the 21st century. Considering all public schools I have been teaching in are modernized with Smart Boards and electronics, this school seemed like a trip to the past!

What do you think?

We ended the day with a stop at a local fudge shop and a sweet shop to buy candy for the ride home. Oh, and I also found a new friend, a Scottish Piper teddy bear that I have named Hampton. It was love at first sight!

A Walk In Chelsea

On Saturday, October 20th I went on a walk around the posh, upscale borough of South West London with Jenn, Jason, and Georgie.

The highlights of the walk? Some of the hotspots featured on the reality television show 'Made In Chelsea' (sort of a British version of The Hills, based in LA).

It's a very pretty and pristine neighbourhood. I was amazed by the crisp, clean, white buildings and homes in the area. Take a look!

Isn't it just beautiful? How do the houses and flats stay so white?

One of the hotspots is Eighty-Six. Maybe one night we will get all dressed up and go in for a cocktail, while pretending to be very classy and posh.

The Chelsea Harbour is a lovely spot along the Thames River as well.

If you look closely, you can tell that the bridge is coloured light pink and light blue, how cute is that?!

I also found the perfect place to live for myself and Chandra. She can live behind the pink door and I'll live behind the dark purple door right next door!

We ended the day with a walk along King's Road and a delicious treat at a cafe. I had carrot cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Very yummy! :)

It was a lovely Chelsea walk!

Cath Kidston Purchase #1

My very first Cath Kidston bag! I feel like a posh Londoner now! :)

Love At First Sight!

It's been over a week since I have had an on-call supply day. When you have to wake up early, get ready, and wait for that phone call to tell you what your day's adventure will be, it's nerve wracking. At 7:02 am, my phone call came. My assignment today: Reception at St. Mary's & St. Pancras Church of England Primary School. "It's a good school" Daniel from Vision Teaching said. The real plus for me though came from the directions. The school was just a short tube ride away near Euston Square Station.
I was walking down the street looking for the school, and honestly it was an experience where you are looking around, then you physically turn around, and Boom! there it is.
This is what I saw.

It's the fanciest looking and most beautiful school I've ever seen! The inside is just as nice, lots of glass windows letting in sunlight, a big open staircase in the front foyer, a large welcoming staff room, and beautiful staff bathrooms. The school is clean and organised, with wonderful displays of children's work and school events.
So, not only was the school lovely but my Reception class was the best I've had so far. They were well-behaved and so cute! Plus, it was the first class where I actually mastered more than 2 or 3 names by the end of the day!
As well, it was a Reception class and and program where there actually was meaningful teaching and learning happening. All of the TAs were nice and helpful, and the entire school staff actually acknowledged my presence in the school! (A wonderful feeling!).
The best part? The Head Teacher has asked me back to teach the Reception class again tomorrow. Yay!

London Discovery #3

n Canada, the common phrase upon greeting someone after Helllo, Hi, or Hey is 'How are you?'. It's a logical phrase and shows interest in the well being of the other person. In London, and quite possibly the rest of Great Britain, the phrase is 'You alright?'.
Now, it's taken me a month to catch on to this question commonly being asked to me by friendly staff I have encountered at schools. At first, I thought it was because I had a scared, concerned look of uncertainty plastered on my face. But, now that I'm becoming more familiar with some schools and I know that I look confident, and the question is still being asked, I think I finally get it! At last, the time that officially made this discovery was this morning when I witnessed a number of times 'You alright?' being asked between teachers upon arriving in their classrooms. As I think about, I don't know if I've actually heard a British person ask 'How are you?'. Quite interesting.

Room 101

Now, here's an unexpected London experience!

Free tickets to a taping of the BBC comedy show Room 101, starring host Frank Skinner.

My flatmate Marzena invited me along and I must say I am glad that she did! It was such a neat experience to be in the audience of a show for television.
Room 101 is a BBC comedy television series in which celebrities are invited to discuss their pet hates and persuade the host to consign them to a fate worse than death.
The three celebrity guests on this episode were Paloma Faith, Debora Meaden, and Jason Manford. I suggest Googling them!

I really enjoyed the show. It was very funny, and it was neat to see how a comedy show of that nature is filmed. It will be even more interesting once I see what was edited out when it airs!

The best pet hates that the guests nominated to Room 101 were Fifty Shades of Grey, small cars hiding in big parking spots, and while I definitely don't agree with this one.. Paloma Faith's discussion of Ugg Boots.

The show will be broadcasted in early 2013. If I can find a link online after it airs I will pass it along!

Here's to fun, unexpected but forever memorable experiences abroad!

It's a Canadian Thanksgiving at 106 Finchley Road

In attendance:
4 Canadians
4 Australians
1 British/Portugese

Now, who else except those who were there could say they have had that mix of culture at a Thanksgiving meal before?

On the menu:
Turkey Panceta stuffed with Goat Cheese & Dried Cranberries
Roast Potatoes
Stuffing
Carrots
Roast Vegetables
Pear & Prosciutto Salad

And Bragging Rights Go To...

My Uncle James and Aunt Susan for being my first official visitors in London! On Saturday, October 6th I spent the day enjoying a nice walk along the South Bank, eating a tasty lunch at Giraffe, and taking a boat ride down the Thames River. It was a beautiful day, no rain clouds in sight! The boat ride was a great way to see all of the developments along the Thames River, as well as the classic tourist sights. I must say I really enjoyed going under Tower Bridge!
I also spotted Shakespeare's Globe, a reconstruction of his original Globe Theatre built in 1997.
Further along the Thames towards Greenwich is high end real estate, similar to the Lakeshore developments in Toronto. The are flats that sell for millions of Great British Pounds, that Londoners buy to live in Monday thru Friday, and escape from on the weekends.
Maybe one day I'll own one of those flats!

Saturday 6 October 2012

New month, new me!

I'm 6 days into October and already I feel a change! I'm happier, more positive, and more excited about this adventure. Do you want to know what really changed my mood? An iPhone 4S. Yes, the power of an iPhone is amazing. While it may not be the iPhone 5, it is 100% mine and it has allowed me to feel connected to my family and friends back home again. I've started my list of all I want to do while I'm on this adventure and I even collected more brochures today! So, to everyone who was concerned after my last post, don't worry. In the span of almost a week, I feel so much better. It am in London! I am teaching! I'm young, and the world is at my fingertips. I can do this! Thanks Apple, you make good products. :)

20 Days In...

Part of me wants to keep my blog upbeat and happy, to reflect and record all of the great adventures and fun times I have, and those only. But if I really want to have a blog that is honest and encompasses completely my adventures abroad, then I need to include the adventure that I'm dealing with every day since I got here.

I'm homesick. Homesick like I never thought I would be. Some days I get through it better then others, but I can only ignore it or push the feelings aside for so long before it hits me again. I miss my parents. I miss my friends. I miss how much I could get accomplished in one day because I knew where to go to do this or find that. I miss driving my car BLEE. I miss Dairy Queen ice cream and Fuzzy Peaches.

It hasn't been easy to get settled here. While I know I'm lucky because I didn't have to worry about finding a place to live when I got here, and I arrived with a good career job, I still have had my own challenges. Getting a debit visa card from HSBC bank here has been a nightmare. Tomorrow will be day 21 and I may finally have it in my hand. Internet access is manageable, as you can buy dongles (mobile sticks) with limited data which is good for daily use. But I miss downloading music and watching my North American tv shows online. I miss being connected constantly on an iPhone to Facebook and Twitter, not only to keep up with my friends, but also things in the world of Hollywood and local news. I was counting on Skype to keep me in touch, but with limited internet I haven't been able to do that.

Don't get me wrong, I am enjoyed seeing the sights of London. I'm also enjoying living at 106 Finchley Road. I think the greatest group of young individuals lives here. Every one is super nice and friendly and I've never felt so comfortable in a house I've shared. Teaching is fun too, and I have one week of experience under my belt so far.

But, those great things don't take away from being vulnerable and easily brought to tears from an email from my mom or friends.

I know that this adventure is a great lifetime experience, and hopefully I'll start to feel settled in time. Plus Christmas isn't too far away and I'll be home for a visit then. I just never thought I was going to feel homesick like I do. It's yet another thing about living in London that I wasn't prepared for I guess.

M&M World!

On Saturday, September 29th, I visited M&M World in Leicester Square. It was just what it sounds like, a world (or store I guess if you want to be completely correct) of M&M chocolates! Thank you Jenn & Jason for taking me on this adventure! :) Of course, I didn't leave empty handed. My bag of M&M's featured purple coloured peanut ones, as well as the UK mix peanut ones. Then I tried dark pink regular milk chocolate, and topped it off with some M&M's with crispy centres. Jenn swears they have these back home, but I don't remember them in Canada at all.
